Week 3: Last week we started to become familiar with Westpoint Bridge Design and started to design a bridge. In class we discussed and observed different situations where bridges collapsed. We saw several videos of bridges from the past that had collapsed for different reasons and discussed the details in depth. This class presentation was to help us understand why bridges collapse and how we can prevent from facing the same problems in our bridges. For rest of the class my group was busy learning how to use the Westpoint Bridge Design software and the different options provided. For the following week, each individual was assigned to design a bride, which gave me the opportunity to explore how to make a efficient and low costing bridge with various methods.
Week 3: During the previous week in class, we discussed the factors that impact the construction of bridges. We were introduced to few videos of bridges that collapsed. It helped us understand how a simple error in calculation can have much greater impact. After the short lecture, we went back into our groups brainstormed ideas for typical truss bridge using the Westpoint Bridge design. During the process, we learned the basic controls to connect solid bars into a bridge and animate it. Afterwards, we assigned each team member to come up with a design for the bridge that ranged below $400,000. During week 3, we would be analyzing and combine the beneficial aspects of each bridge to recreate a stronger, efficient and cheaper bridge.
